While technical innovation has contributed to today’s socioeconomic development, it has also caused modern society to
face various problems stemming from human activities and social and natural environments. The humanities and social
sciences, which are disciplines that explore the meanings and values behind human events and present multifaceted
viewpoints and ideas, are expected to play an important role in solving these problems.
Against this backdrop, Osaka University launched the “Project for the Co-Creation of Academic Knowledge centered on
the Humanities and Social Sciences” in September 2020, commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports,
Science and Technology.
The purpose of this project is to create new academic knowledge centering on the humanities and social sciences with a
view to exploring new ideas and technologies needed in future society and tackling social problems. Through this project,
we hope to build a co-creation platform that brings together people with different roles and positions, e.g., researchers in
the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and other specialties and people active in various sectors of society, to
develop a vision for a future society.
